Ventral view of a sheep brainstem. The
pyramids (p) emerge form the
pons and run beside the midline along the ventral surface of the
myelencephalon. Because they decussate (cross sides), pyramids disappear from the surface at the juncture with the spinal cord (asterisk). The
trapezoid body (tr) and vestibulocochlear nerve (VII) are found in the rostral 25% of the medulla oblongata. The motor nucleus of the facial nerve (f) is located caudal to the trapezoid body. To return to the sheep image, click

The pons and a stump of trigeminal nerve (V) are labeled.
