Canine Brain Transection Through Diencephalon
A canine brain was transected through the diencephalon and stained with luxol blue (white matter) and cresyl violet (gray matter). Telencephalon surrounds the diencephalon. Notice that the hippocampus (h) is deep to the lateral ventricle (unlabeled). Bilaterally, the curved hippocampus is sectioned twice, above and below. The fimbria (fi) is a white matter ledge lateral to the hippocampus. The fimbria is composed of fibers from the hippocampus; when the fibers turn and run rostrally the term fornix (fo) is applied to them.
