The rhinencephalon is colored red on the left and individual rhinencephalic structures are labeled on the right. The ventral portion of the telencephalon is called rhinencephalon (nose brain) because of its olfactory connections. The lateral rhinal sulcus (7&11) separates rhinencephalon from the neocortex. Superficial rhinencephalic structures include: olfactory bulb (1); olfactory peduncle (2); medial olfactory stria (3); lateral olfactory stria (5); and piriform lobe (9).
