The cerebellar cortex has three layers. The granule cell layer (labeled at the right) is the deepest, it is located immediately superficial to the white matter. The Purkinje cell layer is evident as a single row of large perikarya at the outer edge of the granule cell layer. The molecular layer is most superficial; it is relatively acellular and contains dendrites of Purkinje neurons and axons of granule cells. In addition to Purkinje and granule cells (neurons), the cortex also contains basket cells (labeled at the left).
