Occlusal surface of equine maxillary cheek teeth. The hard palate lies between the cheek teeth. It has 9 pairs of symmetrical palatine ridges (not labeled). Caudal to the hard palate the soft palate (7) has been cut to expose the nasal septum (asterisk). 1, premolar 2; 2, premolar 3; 3, premolar 4; 4, molar 1; 5, molar 2; 6, molar 3; 8, necrotic infundibulum; 9, normal infundibulum; 10, secondary dentin filling one of five so called pulp horns. That is, the pulp cavity typically has 5 parts which are sealed off by secondary dentin as the tooth wears (dental attrition).
