Surgical exposure of the jejunum (1). Because the horse is very lean, the mesojejunum is transparent and therefore the lymphatic vessels (lacteals) appear as thin white lines (asterisks). The lacteals are so named because the lymphatic fluid (chyle) they transport resembles milk. 2, free band on a loop of small colon. (Courtesy of William Perez, Montevideo, Uruguay)
