Cerebellar Cortical Circuitry

Granule cells, the only excitatory cell type in the cerebellar cortex, send axons into the molecular layer. The axons bifurcate, run longitudinally in a folium, and excite numerous Purkinje and basket cells, by synapsing on dendritic trees. A row of excited Purkinje cells send axons through white matter to inhibit selective neurons in cerebellar nuclei. Excited basket cells within the row inhibit neighboring Purkinje cells bilaterally via transverse axons with "basket" axon terminals.
