Substantia nigra is gray matter found in the midbrain, deep to the crus cerebri. (The gray matter contains melanin pigment in the human brain.) Neurons of substantia nigra synthesize dopamine and have reciprocal connections with basal nuclei. In humans, lesions of substantia nigra produce Parkinson's Disease.
