The surface of the cerebral cortex has ridges and grooves, respectively called gyri and sulci. Primary sensory areas (labeled below) are where the different kinds of sensory information first arrive in the cerebral cortex. Movement commands leave the cortex through the motor area. Remaining areas constitute association cortex (where significance is extracted from sensory informationn and cognitive judgements are made). (Note: The olfactory area is in the rhinencephalon.)
