The nucleus ambiguus consists of sparse SE neuron cell bodies situated ventral to the nucleus of the spinal tract of the trigemninal nerve.The SE neurons innervate skeletal muscle of the pharynx, larynx, and esophagus. Most of the innervation is via the vagus nerve some axons enter cranial nerve IX and the bulbar root of XI.
