The brain stem includes the diencephalon, mesencephalon, ventral part of the metencephalon (pons), and myelencephalon. Thus, the brainstem is what remains after the cerebrum (telencephalon) and cerebellum (dorsal part of the metencephalon) are removed from the brain.
