Motor Nuclei in the Ventral Horn

Large motor neurons in the ventral horn form motor nuclei. In cervical and lumbosacral enlargement segments, the ventral horn is greatly expanded laterally by motor nuclei that innervate limbs. The lateral motor nuclei are somatotopically organized, as shown below in a transected L7 segment of the canine spinal cord.
