Three stages of cerebellum develpment are shown below. The cerebellum begins as "rhombic lips", which are bilateral dorsal expansions of alar plates of the metencephalon. The lips expand into the roof plate and merge medially forming a midline isthmus, the future cerebellar vermis. Each rhombic lip becomes a cerebellar hemisphere.
