Canine Medulla Oblongata Transection
Transection through the caudal half of the myelencephalon. Bilateral pyramids (p) are visible. This level is characterized by the serpentine-shaped olivary nucleus, which sends axons to the cerebellum. Fibers of the hypoglossal nerve (arrow) run from the hypoglossal nucleus to the exterior, passing lateral to the olivary nucleus. The fourth ventricle (IV) and cranial nerves X and XI are labeled.
