Brain Anatomy Introduction CLOSE
Canine Midbrain Transection
Transverse section through a canine midbrain that is surrounded by telencephalon (white matter is stained blue). The mesencephalic aqueduct (green arrow) is surrounded by periaqueductal gray matter. The midbrain region that is dorsal to the aqueduct is designated tectum. The rostral colliculus (rc) is within the tectum. The region immediately ventral to the tectum is called tegmentum. Ventral to it, observe the substantia nigra (sn) and crus cerebri (cr).

Labeled non-mesencephalic structures are: medial geniculate (mg), hippocampus (hip), and lateral ventricle (lat).
