Spinal Cord Anatomy CLOSE
Spinal Cord Gray Matter (T-10)
Gray matter is commonly divided bilaterally into a dorsal horn, a ventral horn and, between the two, intermediate substance. In thoracolumbar segments, intermediate substance contains an intermediolateral nucleus (sympathetic preganglionic neurons), forming a lateral horn. The dorsal horn is capped by a distinct region of small neurons, called substantia gelatinosa. The most superficial nucleus in the dorsal horn is the marginal nucleus. Because it contains flat neuron cell bodies, it is hard to visualize, but the nucleus is important because it contains pain projection neurons.
Note: The actual gray-white matter interface is irregular since neuron processes radiate out from the gray matter into the white matter.
