Lab 1: Nervous Tissue Histology
Receptors

Receptors

Receptors are sensory endings of peripheral branches of afferent (GSA & GVA) axons. Receptors function to convert environmental energy into nerve conduction signals. Morphologically, some receptors are free nerve endings, others are encapsulated by cells derived from lemmocytes and perinerual epithelium.

On glass slide 107 in your Histology slide box, containing a pelvic urethra section of a male cat (triple stain), find a Pacinian corpuscle in the location illustrated below. (See Fig. 17.)

Fig. 17. A Pacinian corpuscle (lamellar corpuscle) consists of a large axon surrounded by concentric layers of flattened cells. Innermost cells are lemmocytes; outer ones are derived from perineural epithelium. The Pacinian corpuscle responds to mechanical stimulation, particularly transient stimuli (vibration vs steady pressure).
