Female Caribou Skull

Caribou (reindeer) are the only cervid species where the female has antlers. While the males drop their antlers in late Fall, the females keep theirs until the Spring, possibly to defend their calves from predators. Asymmetric antlers are common in caribou. This specimen has a large brow tine on the left but none on the right side. The Minnesota Zoo has a large herd of caribou.
