Feline Prostatic Urethra
Above: Transverse section through the prostatic urethra of a cat (color added). The prostate is bi-lobed and located dorsal to the urethra. The urethral lumen (U) is surrounded by a combined lamina propria-submucosa (blue).
Postprostatic striated urethralis muscle (brown) surrounds the urethra and is thick ventrally. Smooth muscle has an insignificant sphincter role at this level. A small amount of smooth muscle is present on the dorsal surface of the prostate and within trabeculae partitioning prostatic lobules (not evident here).
Below: Canine and feline prostate glands are compared in transverse sections through prostatic urethrae.
Both prostate glands are bi-lobed but the canine gland is relatively larger and completely encircles the urethra.
