Right lateral view of the mediastinum. To open the right atrium, make a longitudinal incision from the caudal vena cava (1) to the cranial vena cava (2). Then make a second incision ventrocaudally through the right auricle (3). Identify these large veins: azygos v. (4), right internal thoracic v. (5), right brachiocephalic v. (6), right external jugular v. (7), and the cut right subclavian v. (8).

The brachiocephalic trunk (9) and descending aorta (10) are barely visible. Look for a thoracic duct (asterisks) between the azygos vein and the descending aorta. A tracheobronchial lymph node (11) is evident just caudal to the cut right principal bronchus. The esophagus (12) is prominent caudal to the trachea.
