Deep surface of the thoracic wall. The surface is covered by costal parietal pleura, except where the probe has elevated a nerve and vessels and where ribs are cut (asterisk). Internal intercostal muscle fascicles (1) run between adjacent ribs (2). An intercostal vein (3), artery (4), and nerve (5) run along the caudal border of each rib.
