Cat dissection: Elevate the sternum to observe the ventral mediastinum (asterisk) (sternopericardial ligament) attached to the sternum. Reflect the thoracic wall laterally, incising a caudal intercostal space (arrows) to facilitate the lateral reflection. Cut ribs as far dorsally as possible (double arrows) to expose thoracic viscera.
