Dorsal view of the gluteal region: A group of four small muscles (caudal-hip group) antagonize the tendency of gluteal muscles to rotate the limb inward (pronate). Located caudal to the deep gluteal m. (1), the group includes the gemelli mm. (2), which is made to look like twin muscles by the tendon (asterisk) of the internal obturator m., and the quadratus femoris m. (3).
Other visible muscles include: the reflected superficial gluteal m. (4), the transected middle gluteal m. (5), with its piriformis m. component (6), and the hamstring muscles: biceps femoris m. (7), semitendinosus m. (8), and semimenbranosus m. (9). The arrow points to the canine sacrotuberous ligament.
