A canine left manus was dissected to show dorsal surfaces of digits 2 though 5. The distal phalanx (1), middle phalanx (2) and proximal phalanx (3) of the third digit are labeled, as is the third metacarpal bone (4). Arrows indicate the paired dorsal elastic ligaments of the fourth digit. The paired dorsal elastic ligaments run from the proximal end of the middle phalanx to the extensor process of the distal phalanx, producing a "V" shape. (The insert image shows the ligaments enlarged.)
Dorsal elastic ligaments passively elevate the distal phalanx and thereby retract the claw (unguis) away from the ground (this retraction is opposed by active contraction of the deep digital flexor m. which stretches the ligament and extends the claw).
