The external jugular vein (1) runs across the surface of the sternocephalicus m. The vein is important clinically for drawing blood samples. The sternocephalicus m. (2) originates from the first sternebra (manubrium) and runs to the head where it has occipital and mastoid attachments. (These two parts of the sternocephalicus m. are indistinct in the neck and not worth dissecting.)

On the ventral surface of the trachea, the sternohyoideus m. (3) and the more lateral sternothyroideus m. (4) can be seen. The thyroid gland (5) is also visible.
