Cranial Nerve Nuclei
CLOSE
Figure 18—5. Locations of cranial nerve nuclei are shown in transverse sections (left), a dorsal view of the brain stem (lower right), and a medial view of the right half of the brain stem (top right). In all cases, motor nuclei are colored on the right side, and sensory nuclei on the left. Visceral efferent (parasympathetic) nuclei are green. Somatic efferent nuclei are dark blue and light blue (the latter nuclei innervate pharyngeal arch derivatives).  The visceral afferent nucleus is orange. General somatic afferent nuclei are red. Special somatic afferent nuclei (vision, hearing, vestibular sense) are not shown, except as landmarks. The medial view shows the VII genu, formed by axons from facial nucleus hooking dorsal to abducent nucleus before exiting laterally. (III-XII = cranial nerves; motorV = motor nucleus of V; nucl. = nucleus; nucl.amb. = nucleus ambiguus; nucl. mes.tr.V & mes.tr.V = nucleus of the mesencephalic tract of V and mesencephalic tract of V; nucl.pon.sen.V = pontine sensory nucleus of V; nucl.sp.tr.V & sp.tr.V = nucleus of the spinal tract of V and spinal tract of V; nucl.sol.tr. & sol.tr. = nucleus of the solitary tract and solitary tract; p.III, p.VII, p.IX, and p.X = parasympathetic nuclei of the respective cranial nerves. Selected landmarks are labeled.)
