Two sites of neocortex and the amydala basal nucleus are heavily involved in visceral information processing. The insula cortex (deep to the sylvian fissure) is a visceral sensory cortex. Medial frontal cortex (rostroventral to the corpus callosum) serves as a visceral motor cortex. The amygdala has a major emotional/affective role (particularly in regard to fear behavior) which impacts visceral organs.
