Left Vagus Nerve
Left lateral view of the vagus nerve in a canine thorax. The vagosympathetic nerve trunk is continued as vagus nerve caudal to the middle cervical ganglion As it passes the arch of the aorta, the left vagus nerve gives off the recurrent laryngeal nerve, which hooks around the ligmentum arteriosum. The vagus nerve sends branches to the heart and lungs (not preserved in this dissection). Beyond the lungs the vagus nerve divides into dorsal and ventral branches. Vagal nerve trunks are formed when right and left branches combine prior to entering the abdomen.
