Dorsal Vagal Nerve Trunk
Left side view of the dorsal abdomen of a dog. The diaphragm has been incised and reflected to expose esophagus joining the stomach. Notice, on the esophagus, that the dorsal vagal nerve trunk is formed by the union of dorsal branches of right and left vagus nerves. Within the abdomen, the dorsal vagal nerve trunk sends a branch to join the celiacomesenteric nerve plexus. Vagal preganglionic axons run in plexuses on celiac and cranial mesenteric arteries to innervate terminal ganglia within abdominal viscera (cranial to the descending colon). The major splanchnic nerve, from the sympathetic trunk, carries sympathetic preganglionic fibers to prevertebral ganglia in celiac and cranial mesenteric plexuses.
