Cranial Cervical Ganglion & External Carotid Plexus
Medial view of the right cranial cervical ganglion (cr cerv gang) following extensive dissection in the dog . The external carotid nerve plexus (ext carotid n plexus) can be seen leaving the ganglion and running on the external carotid artery. (The plexus that runs on the internal carotid artery (int carotid) through the middle ear is not evident.) The cervical sympathetic trunk (cerv symp trunk) and the vagus nerve combine to form the vagosympathetic trunk (v-s trunk). The vagus nerve gives off the cranial laryngeal nerve (cran laryn n). Other visible nerves are the glossopharyngeal (IX), accessory (XI), and ventral branch of the C-1 spinal nerve and its branches. Also labeled are the pharynx, tympanic bulla (tymp bulla), common carotid artery (com carotid a), and medial retropharyngeal lymph node (med retrophar lymph node).
