Autonomic Postganglionic Receptors
Acetycholine and Norepinephrine released by postganglionic autonomic neurons can bind to several different types of G-protein metabotrophic receptors. Acetycholine binds to five types of muscarinic receptors. Norepinephrine binds to two major categories of adrenergic receptors, designated alpha and beta. The above table compares features of the metabotrophic receptors. (Note: receptors for detrusor relaxation are species specific, e.g., beta-two receptors in rabbits, beta-three receptors in dogs.)
